Drug Prevention: A National Security Imperative
By Dr. Rajesh Kumar
January 15, 2025
Substance abuse is not just a health issue; it is a threat to national security that undermines the fabric of society. When young people fall prey to addiction, we lose potential soldiers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and leaders. The economic cost of addiction, in terms of lost productivity, healthcare burden, and criminal justice expenses, runs into billions.
CDF has made drug prevention a priority through initiatives like NAVCHETNA and Breaking the Chain. Our approach goes beyond awareness campaigns to include life skills education, peer mentoring, and community engagement. We work with schools, colleges, and community organizations to create environments that support healthy choices.
Our partnership with SPYM (Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses) brings together CDF's strategic reach with SPYM's deep expertise in addiction prevention and rehabilitation. The Master Trainer Training program equips educators with practical tools to identify early warning signs and intervene effectively.
The results have been encouraging. Students who participate in our programs report increased awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and greater confidence in their ability to resist peer pressure. But this is a long-term battle that requires sustained commitment from all stakeholders.
